1 Piece or 2 Piece Scope Rings ?
Where possible we recommend you use a Sportsmatch® One Piece Scope Mount. However certain models of rifle including most pre-charged pneumatic (pcp) precision air rifles and the majority of bolt action centrefire rifles do not allow the use of a One Piece Scope Mount as the breech would be obscured. Sportsmatch® Two Piece Mounts can be used for such rifles. They are high quality, tough, dependable and like all Sportsmatch® scope mounts they are made in Great Britain and Guaranteed for Life.
Rifle Scope Body Tube Diameter
The most common rifle scopes feature a 1 inch (25.4mm) diameter body tube but 30mm and more recently 34mm versions are becoming increasingly common. Before choosing your guns scope mount you will need to know which body tube diameter your rifle scope has. Please note that it is quite common for 1″ rifle scopes to be referred to as 25mm but they do require 1″ scope mounts.
Adjustable / MOA Scope Mounts
Some air rifles have a drooping barrel so the rifle scopes adjustment will almost certainly not have sufficient MOA meaning the shooter will not be able to zero in their rifle. It is impossible to know in advance whether your rifle / scope combination will suffer from this problem as there are several variables such as a rifles integral dovetail grooves on the receiver not being aligned with the barrel. Another reason to use an adjustable rifle scope mount is to optically centre your rifle scope. This is done by winding the elevation and windage turrets to the centre of their adjustment. The rifle can then be roughly zeroed in using the scope mounts with only the final precise movement of the point of impact being carried out on the rifle scopes turrets. Another reason to use an adjustable scope mount is when shooting at long range such as F class centre fire rifle target shooting or even long range vermin shooting with a .22lr rimfire rifle.
How Much Should I Tighten the Screws on my Scope Mount ?
Ring screws (3mm hexagon) – 15 in-lbs. Dovetail clamp screws with 3mm hexagon – 38 in-lbs. Dovetail clamp screws with 4mm hexagon – 55 in-lbs. Rail clamp on Picatinny / Weaver scope mounts – 28 in-lbs. Due to many variables these figures can only be used as a guide. In extreme cases some particularly heavy recoiling rifles may require higher levels of torque to be applied to the dovetail clamp screws only. To avoid damaging the fasteners on your scope mount please only use the allen key supplied or a torque wrench with a suitable metric bit.

Dovetail Width
Around 90% of air rifles and rimfire rifles have integral 11mm / 3/8″ dovetails or grooves as they are sometimes known as machined into the receiver. We offer an extremely comprehensive range of 3/8″ / 11mm scope mounts including fully adjustable versions which even feature lateral adjustment for precision dovetail centering. We also offer scope mounts with wider dovetails / grooves such as our 13mm series which fit most modern BSA air rifle scope rails as well as early Weihrauch HW35 and CZ452 American rifles. Our 15mm versions suit Tikka T3 / T3x, Sako 90 Hunter / Bavarian and CZ527 centrefire rifle receivers as well as our 17mm version which suits CZ550, CZ557 rifles and Parker Hale bases. Some confusion can occur as most rifle manufacturers state the dovetail width of their rifles at the widest point as this is the easiest to measure but some people use the measurement from the narrowest point. If you are unsure if our ring mounts will fit your rifle please contact us. Many centrefire rifles have a Picatinny / Weaver rail which is wider and a different angle to most dovetails. We offer a large range scope mounting solutions for this common system also.
Dampa mounts / Scope Damage – Protection
The recoil produced by some rifles and in particular spring piston and gas ram precision pellet guns is sufficient to damage even a good quality rifle scopes internal mechanism and even break the reticule. Some shooters suffer with several broken reticules in an attempt to mount a rifle scope on their chosen rifle. The solution is a Sportsmatch ‘Dampa Mount’ which features precision machined slideway and high grade rubber bushes which allow the rifle scope to move slightly but return to precisely the same position and therefore not transmit the recoil to the rifle scope. There are 3 models available to suit rifle scopes with a 1 inch or 30mm body tube diameter and aversion to suit Picatinny rails.
Extended / Cantilever Scope Mounts
When using a compact or particularly long rifle scope a reach forward extended mount is sometimes required to increase or reduce eye relief. This type of mount is sometimes called a cantilever scope mount. We offer a range of sizes and heights in this style.
Height of Scope Mounts Required
In each product catergory we publish a maximum (upto) objective lens diameter. Due to both rifle and scope designs varying this can only be used as a guide. If you are unsure that the height of the Sportsmatch scope mount you have chosen will be sufficient to clear your rifle scopes objective lens from the barrel of your rifle, we suggest (prior to purchase) you check. The way you calculate the clearance is by halving the overall outside diameter of your rifle scopes objective lens and then deducting half the rifle scopes body tube diameter. For scopes with a 1″ inch diameter body tube diameter this would mean deducting 1/2″ (12.7mm), 15mm for scopes with a 30mm diameter body tube and 17mm for 34mm scopes. This dimension then gives the figure comparable with the ‘A’ dimension. The amount our ‘A’ dimension is greater than the figure you have calculated is the amount of clearance your scopes objective lens will be clear of your rifles barrel (don’t forget to allow around 2mm for the scopes protective covers). For reference the ‘D’ dimension shows the height from the centre line of the scope to the base of the mount. Calculating your rifle scopes clearance in this way does assume your dovetail or Picatinny rail is not raised above or below your rifles barrel. Please consider that rifles with grooved receivers such as some models of airgun, .22lr and .17HMR rimfire will mean the scope sits lower than a rifle with a raised dovetail or Picatinny base fitted. Something else to consider is that some rifles with a high cheek comb or raised magazine may require high or extra high scope mounts so that your eye is in line with the rifle scope and your head is kept in an upright comfortable position. This is known as cheek weld.
TESTIMONIAL
HEAR FROM OUR CLIENTS
Shooting long range requires the best quality equipment in order to be sure each shoot is consistent and goes where you want it to go. Every aspect of the rifle and scope must be perfectly engineered to give precision and this includes the scope mounts bringing the two together. I have no reservations in paying a high price for equipment if I know I can rely on it but with Sportsmatch mounts I don’t need to pay out for mounts costing twice as much to insure a quality product. I cannot fault these mounts or their build quality which is why the name ‘Sportsmatch’ appears not only on my videos, but more importantly on the mounts of every centrefire rifle I own”.
